Lantern Making Workshop in Hoi An

If you’ve already spent a night in Hoi An then these lanterns need no description, or if you’re considering visiting Hoi An then chances are the best depictions of Hoi An in our opinion are the streets at night lit up with these traditional lanterns. While yes, they do make the entire town look beautiful, for the locals hanging these lanterns outside their homes holds a deeper meaning. The locals believe that hanging lanterns in front of their house will bring luck, happiness and wealth to the family living in the house.

Traditionally the lanterns were only made of silk and the shapes in which it were made were limited, with the passage of time however, lantern makers have diversified not only the shapes of the lantern but also the medium with which they are made. As a result you will now notice that a lot of the lanterns around Hoi An are shaped as a lotus, diamond, triangle and garlics, and they will made from cardboard and nylon fibres in addition to the traditional silk versions.
